Under the toolbar: instructions and warnings
What's new in 2.8
New name: Hockey Gamesheet. The page title, the heading and the access-code message now use it.
Wording on cards and Game Notes: milestones read "800th career game" and "first career goal", years read "14th season in the league", and a player with no games yet shows "First career games". The numbers are the same as before.
Guide tidied up: the toolbar is now a short table at the top, and a Contents list jumps to any section.
Nothing to redo: saved games, lines and settings carry over. A game pulled before this version keeps the old wording on a few lines until you click Refresh.
Earlier updates are listed at the end of this guide, under Release history.
1. Before each game
Check the version number (in the ⋯ menu at the far right) shows the newest version (hard-refresh if not; see Troubleshooting).
Click Change game. In Game Setup, pick the teams, date, time, arena and (optional) special game label.
Click Pull stats on game day, as close to puck drop as is practical. Rosters, records and stats change right up to the game. If you pulled this game earlier, choose Refresh stats (see section 2).
Open Roster check and read it: when the stats were pulled, how many players came in, the captains, players with no pronunciation, and anything that didn't load.
Pick a team with the Team buttons.
Review roster edits (Tap to: Edit). Edits carry over from earlier games for that team, so make sure they're still right: call-ups, removed players, status tags, custom lines, and anything you typed by hand (captains, pronunciations, streaks).
Mark scratches (Tap to: Scratch), including injured players. The league roster can list players on injured reserve, and nothing is tagged or scratched automatically yet. Then set the lines (Tap to: Swap) from the game-night lineup. If a team dresses 11 F / 7 D (or 13 / 5), move the extra player with the Forwards / Defense heading.
Repeat for the other team.
Check the page on screen. If a team runs to a second page, the bar under the toolbar turns red and a dashed page-break line appears (see Printing).
Click Print / PDF and print or save the PDF. Open Game Mode once to confirm the backup screen looks right.
2. Pulling stats
The Pull stats button in Game Setup gets both teams' data from the league's stats feed. It takes about 15 to 30 seconds and runs in two steps, shown on screen: (1) rosters and stats, (2) streaks, career vs. opponent, pronunciations and captains. It only works on the Netlify site, not on a copy of the file opened from your computer.
What a pull fills in
Rosters: every player on each team's current roster, with number, name, position, shoots / catches, height, weight, birth date (for age) and birthplace.
This season (26-27), last season (25-26) and career: regular season only, all teams combined. Career is through last season, and the sheet adds this season on top.
Years in the league: his season number in the league this year ("Rookie" in his first).
Streaks of 3 or more games (see Reading a card), counting only games played before the game date.
Career vs. tonight's opponent, regular season, for any team he played on.
Pronunciations from the league's official pronunciation guide for the season: the last name, plus the first name when it isn't a common English name.
Captains (C / A) from a league-wide captains list kept with the sheet. Roster check shows the list's date. Teams sometimes rotate alternates, so check it.
How acquired:
Teams checked by hand (right now the Avalanche and Kings): exact details, e.g. "Trade: from Montreal, March 21, 2022".
Every other team: worked out from the player's team history. "Draft: 1st Round (4) in 2017" means drafted here and never played for anyone else. "Acquired from Calgary, March 2026" means he moved during a season (the month of his first game here). "Joined from Chicago, 2026 offseason" means he moved between seasons. The league feed can't tell a trade from a signing, so it doesn't say which. "Signed / acquired before his debut" means this is his first team in the league but he wasn't drafted here.
For Game Notes: each team's current streak, last 10 and goals; each player's last 5 games, point streak against tonight's opponent and former teams; and this season's series between the two teams with the last meeting.
The header: record, points, home and road records, and place in the division and conference. The record is before this game: it counts games through the day before. If the game date is in the future, it's the latest record instead.
What a pull does NOT fill in yet (coming in the next update)
Injuries and status tags (e.g. INJURED RESERVE)
Projected lines and starting goalies. Players start in order of last season's points.
You can type these yourself in Edit mode, and you can type over anything that was pulled. What you type is kept and carries forward to the team's next game (see "What a pull never touches" below).
First pull vs. pulling the same game again
A "game" is the two teams plus the date. The first time you pull a game, the sheet just loads it. If you pull a game you've pulled before, you'll be asked what to do:
Refresh stats (recommended)
Gets fresh rosters, stats and standings. Keeps this game's lines, scratches, forward / defense moves and text sizes, and both teams' roster edits. New players are added at the end of their group, and players no longer on the roster drop off.
Start over
Gets fresh data and erases: this game's lines, scratches, forward / defense moves and text sizes, and all roster edits for both teams (added players, removed players, and everything typed in the player editor, such as custom lines, status tags, captains and pronunciations). Those edits are erased for every game of those two teams, not just this one. You'll be asked a second time before anything is erased.
Cancel
Changes nothing.
Refresh button (toolbar): under the matchup is when this game was last pulled and a Refresh button. It does the same as Refresh stats without opening Game Setup or asking first, because it never erases anything. Progress shows in the bar under the toolbar. Use it on game day for the latest numbers. For Start over, use Game Setup.
Nothing is erased until the new pull succeeds. If the pull fails, everything stays exactly as it was.
What a pull never touches
Your Card fields settings, your default team, and other games' lines and scratches.
Your roster edits, unless you choose Start over. Edits are saved per team and carry forward to every game for that team. A pull for the team's next game starts with them still in place.
A number you typed over in the editor (a stat, height, how acquired and so on) keeps showing instead of the pulled number, even after later pulls. To go back to the pulled data for one player, open him in Edit mode and click Reset to pulled data.
Loading a game without pulling
Each game's pulled data is saved on this computer. In Game Setup, a game you've already pulled shows when it was pulled and a Load game button. That opens it with the data you already have, without going to the league feed. Use it to fix a header typo, to switch back to a game, or if the internet is down. Saved data older than 60 days is cleared automatically.
If a pull fails
Game Setup shows a red message saying what went wrong. Nothing on your sheet changes. Check your internet connection and click Pull stats again in a minute.
If only part of a pull fails (for example the standings, one player's page, or step 2: streaks, career vs. opponent or pronunciations), the game still loads with what came in, and Roster check opens to list what's missing. A missing career vs. opponent line is hidden rather than shown wrong. A player whose own page didn't load shows his stats with this team only. Pull again later, or type the missing numbers in Edit mode.
If you can't pull at all, Load game still opens a game you pulled before.
3. Reading the header
Line 1: team name.
Line 2: record (W-L-OTL) · points · place in the division · place in the conference · game number (and the special game label, if you set one). Places are by points; teams on equal points show as tied, e.g. "T-4th". The league's tiebreakers aren't applied.
Line 3: home record · road record.
Line 4: "at [home team]" on the visitors' page, "vs [visitors]" on the home team's page, then date, time and arena.
The game number is each team's own (games played + 1), so the two pages can differ.
Records and standings are as of your latest pull. They're the record before this game (see section 2).
4. Reading a card
Boxed letter
Captain (C) or alternate captain (A), beside the first name, from the captains list (date in Roster check).
Pronunciation
In italics under the name, stressed syllable in capitals, e.g. NIH-koh-las WAH. From the league's official pronunciation guide: the last name, plus the first name when it isn't a common English name. Blank if the guide doesn't have him; Roster check lists those players.
Top right
Shoots / catches (L or R), the position pill (C, LW, RW, D, G) in team color, and an orange PLAYING F / PLAYING D tag if he's been moved to the other group for this game; then height and weight; then years in the league ("14th season in the league", "Rookie" in his first season). Years shortens to "14th season" on cards where the full wording would crowd the name.
Age | Birthplace
Age as of game day
How acquired
Exact details for teams checked by hand; otherwise worked out from team history (see section 2). Type over it in Edit mode any time.
Red tag
Status tag, e.g. INJURED RESERVE or DAY-TO-DAY. Not pulled yet; add it in Edit mode.
Custom line
Your own note in team-color italics, e.g. "Needs 3 points for 900". Added in the player editor.
26-27:
This regular season, all teams combined. Skaters: GP, G-A-PTS. Goalies: GP, W-L-OTL, GAA, save %, shutouts (e.g. 45GP 31-6-6 | 2.02 GAA | .921 | 3 SO; zero shows as "0 SO"). Shows "No games yet" until he plays.
Career:
Career regular-season totals in the league, including this season, same format. "First career games" if he has never played a regular-season game in the league.
25-26:
Last regular season, all teams combined, same format. Off by default; turn it on in Card fields.
Streak lines
Only shown for streaks of 3 or more games. Skaters: point streak with goals and assists ("4-game point streak (2G, 3A)") or games without a point. Goalies: win streak, or winless streak with the record ("5-game winless streak (0-3-2)"; an overtime or shootout loss counts as winless; games without a decision are skipped), plus a scoreless streak once it reaches 60 minutes ("Scoreless streak: 89:10 (last GA 2nd period vs. EDM, April 13)"). Games a player misses don't break a streak. Before his first game this season a streak reads "(end of 25-26)"; once he plays, it reads "(dating to last season)" until it's all this season.
vs LAK:
Career regular-season totals against tonight's opponent, for any team he played on. "First game vs." means he has never faced them. If this part of the pull fails, the line is hidden instead.
All stats are regular season only. Any field can be hidden on every card in Card fields.
5. Card fields
Card fields (in the toolbar, and in the Game Mode bar) lists every field with two checkboxes: Print and Game Mode. Unchecking one hides it on every card, on both teams, for every game, until you turn it back on. Number and name always show.
The small grey note under a field says where it comes from. "Not pulled yet" means it only shows what you type in Edit mode.
A preview next to the checkboxes shows a made-up "#00 Sample Player" with every field filled in, as a printed card and as a Game Mode card. It updates as you tick boxes. Use Skater / Goalie to see the goalie version.
Reset to defaults turns everything back on except Last season.
The Both view always leaves out height, weight, shoots, age, birthplace, years and how acquired, whatever the settings, to keep 40 cards readable.
To tidy just one player's card, edit his text in Edit mode instead.
6. Game Setup and default team
Game Setup opens the first time you use the sheet, and any time you click Change game. Pick the away and home teams (⇄ swaps them), date and time. Choosing the home team fills in its arena; you can type over it. Any two teams work.
The special game label (optional, e.g. "Home Opener") prints in small type after the game number. The date, time and arena make up the header's last line. Game Setup is the only place to change them. Made a typo? Click Change game, fix it and click Load game. No new pull is needed, and your lines, scratches and roster edits stay, because it's the same game. Changing the date or teams makes it a different game, which needs its own pull and starts with fresh lines and scratches (roster edits still carry forward).
The home team shows and prints first.
Default team: if you call the same team every game, tap its name under "Make my default team". Setup then starts with your team picked, and your team shows and prints first even on the road. Tap Clear default to undo it.
The sheet reopens the last game you loaded.
7. Setting lines and scratches
Use the Tap to buttons in the toolbar to choose what tapping a card does: Swap, Scratch or Edit.
Swap: tap one player, then another. They trade places. A forward and a defenseman can swap (goalies only swap with goalies). Tap the same player again to cancel.
Move without a partner: tap a player, then tap the Forwards or Defensemen & Goalies heading (outlined while a player is selected). He moves to the end of that group, e.g. a 7th defenseman playing on the 4th line. A moved player keeps his real position pill and gets an orange PLAYING F or PLAYING D tag. Moves are saved for this game only; Reset clears them.
Forwards print three across, so each row is a line; defense prints two across, so each row is a pair.
Scratch: tap a player to scratch him. He moves off the page into the dashed Scratched box below it; tap him there to put him back. On the printout and in Game Mode he's left off and listed on the Scratches line.
Players start in order of last season's points (goalies by games played). Your own changes are kept through a Refresh stats; Reset goes back to the starting order.
8. Edit rosters
Choose Tap to: Edit, then tap any player to open his editor. Everything on a card is changed here: number, name, position, captain letter, shoots, season number in the league, pronunciation, height, weight, birth date, birthplace, how acquired, status tag, custom line, this season, career (through last season), last season and career-vs-opponent stats, and both streak lines. Clear a streak line to hide it.
Points add up automatically from goals and assists. Switching the position to G changes the stat boxes to W, L, OTL, GAA, SV% and SO (shutouts).
+ Add player (in the yellow bar while editing) adds a call-up who isn't in the pull yet. Remove from roster takes a player off every view (different from a scratch); removed players are listed in the bar with Restore.
Edited players show a small blue "✎ edited" mark on screen (never on the printout). Reset to pulled data in the editor undoes your edits to one player; Clear all edits in the bar undoes the whole team.
Roster edits are saved per team and carry forward to every game for that team on this computer, through every pull. Only Start over (section 2), Clear all edits or Reset to pulled data removes them. The vs-opponent line you enter is kept for that opponent only.
If you added a call-up by hand and a later pull brings him in too, he'll appear twice. Delete your added copy (open it, Delete player).
9. Printing / PDF
Print from the Netlify page. Printing doesn't work inside Claude's preview.
What you see is what prints. Each team shows as a true-size page (Letter or Legal) with the print margins. Scratched players sit in a dashed box below the page; they don't print except on the Scratches line.
Both teams always print, no matter which team is showing. Your default team (or the home team) prints first.
Paper: Letter | Legal (toolbar) sets the paper for printing and for the PDF, and the on-screen page changes shape to match. It's remembered on this computer. Chrome and Edge pick the paper size in the print window automatically. To print on paper with Legal, the printer needs legal paper loaded.
Text: Auto (the default) picks the largest text from 100% down to 70% that fits each team on one page, separately for each team. The toolbar shows the size the team on screen is using. Scratching players lets Auto make the text bigger again.
Text − / + switches to manual: you pick the size (50% to 160%) and it's used for both teams. Click Auto to go back.
Two pages: if a team doesn't fit on one page (with Auto at 70%, or at your manual size), it prints on two pages. A red dashed line on screen shows where page 2 starts, and the bar under the toolbar turns red. The break falls between forwards and defense when the forwards fit on page 1; otherwise after the last full line of forwards that fits. Cards are never split. Page 2 starts with a "continued" bar with the team name.
To get back to one page: scratch players who aren't dressing (pulled rosters include extra and injured players), turn off fields for Print in Card fields, switch to Legal, or lower the text.
In the print window, choose Save as PDF for a PDF copy. Turn on Background graphics if the colored headers, pills or tags print white. Leave the margins on Default and scale at 100% so the printout matches the screen.
10. Game Mode (16:9 backup screen)
Shows one team full-screen: Forwards three across (each row is a line) on the left, Defense pairs on the right. Goalies go under the forwards or under the defense, wherever there's room. Every card is the same size. Scratched players are hidden.
Each card is a larger copy of the printed card: number, name and pronunciation, position pill and height/weight, bio, then stats. Moved players show the PLAYING F / D tag here too.
Card fields in the Game Mode bar sets what Game Mode cards show (the Game Mode column). Fewer fields means bigger text.
Cards size themselves to fill the screen, all at the same size (100% = the largest that fits). − shrinks them down to 60%; + grows them up to 130%. Above 100% the cards are larger than the screen: scroll to see the rest. + greys out at 130%.
Use the team buttons to show one team, or Both to show both teams side by side (your default team, or the home team, on the left). Both uses compact cards (number, name, captain letter, pill and stats), with goalies in a thin strip at the bottom of each side. Rows line up straight across both teams. It's best on a large monitor; on a laptop, flipping between teams is easier to read.
The left/right arrow keys or the space bar cycle through the teams and Both.
Exit or Esc returns to the sheet. Taps do nothing in Game Mode, so you can't change the lineup by accident.
11. Saving and Reset
Everything saves automatically in this browser on this computer: each game's pulled data, lines, scratches and text settings; roster edits per team; your default team, paper size, Card fields settings and last-loaded game. Nothing carries over to another computer or browser, and the old Avs sheet site keeps its own separate data.
Reset this game's lines (in the ⋯ menu) puts this game's lines back to the starting order, clears scratches and forward / defense moves, sets Text back to Auto, and re-applies the Game Setup header. It doesn't pull, and roster edits are kept; clear those in Edit mode.
Reset vs. Start over: Reset only touches this game's lines and scratches. Start over (in a re-pull) also erases both teams' roster edits and gets fresh data.
12. Roster check
Roster check in the toolbar shows when this game was pulled, how many players came in for each team (forwards / defense / goalies), the record date, how many players have streaks, whether career vs. opponent came in, the captains (and the captains list's date), players with no pronunciation, where how acquired came from, and anything that didn't load.
It opens by itself after a pull if something was missing.
The automatic injury, lineup and starting-goalie check is coming in a later update. Until then, check injuries and lines yourself on game day, and tag or scratch players by hand.
13. Troubleshooting
The sheet asks for an access code: this device isn't signed in, or it was signed out. Enter your code. If it says the code was turned off or the season pass ended, contact Doug.
Page shows an old version after an update: compare the version label, then hard-refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows, Cmd+Shift+R on Mac).
Pull stats says it only works on the Netlify site: you opened a copy of the file from your computer. Use the site address instead.
Pull failed: nothing changed. Check the internet connection and try again in a minute. Load game still opens a game you pulled earlier.
A stat doesn't match the league's site after a pull: check whether the player shows "✎ edited". If so, a number you typed is overriding the pull; open him and click Reset to pulled data.
A player appears twice: you added him by hand and the pull now has him too. Delete your added copy.
Colors print white: turn on Background graphics in the print window.
A team prints on two pages: see Printing for the ways back to one page. If the printout doesn't match the screen, check the print window: margins Default, scale 100%, and paper matching the Letter / Legal setting.
A header line is wrong: fix it in Change game (Game Setup), then Load game.
Something on a card is wrong:Tap to: Edit, tap the player, fix it, Save.
"Too many wrong codes": after 5 wrong tries in 15 minutes the connection is locked for 15 minutes. Wait, then check the code (letters and numbers only; dashes and capitals don't matter).
My changes disappeared: you're on a different computer or browser, a private window, the site data was cleared, or someone chose Start over.
14. Access code
Each person has their own access code (e.g. MIK-49JM). Doug sends it to you.
The first time you open the sheet on a device (laptop, tablet, phone), it asks for the code. Enter it once and that device stays unlocked until your access end date, usually Aug. 1 after the playoffs. You can use the same code on several devices.
Capitals, spaces and the dash don't matter when you type it.
The ⋯ menu shows who the device is signed in as and the end date. Sign out of this device locks it again. Use it on a shared or borrowed computer. Your saved games stay on the device.
Pulls only work on an unlocked device. If a device is signed out or the code is turned off, the sheet asks for a code the next time it's opened or the next time you pull.
If there's no internet when you open the sheet, it opens anyway with the games already saved on that device, so a dropped connection at the arena doesn't lock you out of a game you already pulled.
Doug can see each person's devices, when they were last used and which games were pulled, so please keep your code to yourself.
15. Game Notes
Click Notes beside the team buttons to open the Game Notes page. Click a team to go back to its sheet.
Everything on it is worked out from the pull by fixed rules. Nothing is written by AI and nothing is guessed. If a section says "None", the rule found nothing. If it says "Not in this pull", that part didn't load: click Refresh.
Dressed players only. Scratched players are left out, so set your scratches first.
My notes: type your own notes in the box at the top. They're saved with this game on this computer and print at the top of the page. Reset this game's lines keeps them; Start over erases them.
The matchup: which meeting this is this season, the season series so far with each result, or the last meeting if they haven't met yet this season.
Team: record, home and road, standings places, game number, current streak, last 10 and goals for and against. All of it is before tonight's game.
Season leaders: top three in points, goals and assists among dressed skaters, and goalie records. Shown once the team has played.
Milestone watch: players close to a round career number (regular season). The distances are fixed:
Games played
within 5 of every 100
Goals
within 3 of every 50
Assists, points
within 5 of every 100
Goalie wins
within 3 of every 50
Goalie shutouts
within 1 of every 10
A skater one game away reads "plays his 800th career game tonight". A goalie one game away reads "his next appearance is his 200th career game", because a dressed goalie may not play. Players still looking for a first career point, goal or win are listed too. Closest come first.
Streaks: every streak that's on the cards (3 or more games), best first.
Hot hands: skaters with 4 or more points in their last 5 games this season, and goalies who won all or all but one of their last 5 decisions. Needs at least 3 games this season.
Against the opponent (career): the top five scorers against tonight's opponent, each goalie's record against them, anyone with a point in 3 or more straight games against them, a goalie who has won his last 3 or more decisions against them, players facing a former team, and players facing them for the first time.
Also: players who would be making their debut, players in their first season in the league, and birthdays on game day.
Not included: franchise records and all-time lists (for example passing a retired player on a team's scoring list). Put those in My notes.
Printing: tick Print notes in the Print group and Game Notes prints after the two team sheets, on the paper size you chose. The text shrinks a little (to 80% at most) to stay on one page; with a lot of notes it runs to a second page, and a section is never split across pages. Each section heading carries the team's code so the second page still reads clearly. The setting is remembered.
16. Release history
The newest update is at the top of this guide. Earlier updates, newest first:
Version 2.7
Game Notes. A third page that sums up what's worth knowing going into the game, for both teams: the season series and last meeting, team records and streaks, milestone watch, active streaks, hot hands, career numbers against tonight's opponent, former teams, debuts and birthdays. Click Notes next to the team buttons. See section 15, Game Notes.
My notes box at the top of that page for your own notes.
Print notes tick box in the Print group. When it's ticked, Game Notes prints after the two team sheets.
A game pulled before this version needs one Refresh to fill in every section.
Version 2.6
Goalie shutouts. Every goalie stat line now ends with shutouts: 45GP 31-6-6 | 2.02 GAA | .921 | 3 SO. That covers this season, career, last season (when that line is turned on) and vs. tonight's opponent. Zero shows as "0 SO".
The player editor has an SO box on each goalie stat row.
A game you pulled before this version shows shutouts after you click Refresh.
Version 2.5
An Admin page link in the ⋯ menu, only for access codes marked Admin.
Version 2.4
Access codes. Each person has their own code. Enter it once on each device and that device stays unlocked until the code's end date. See section 14, Access code.
The ⋯ menu shows who this device is signed in as and the access end date, and has Sign out of this device.
Version 2.3
Toolbar regrouped in game-day order: Game (matchup, Change game, Roster check, when it was pulled, Refresh), Lineup (Team, Tap to), Print (Text, Paper, Card fields), then Print / PDF and Game Mode on the right.
New Refresh button under the matchup. It pulls fresh stats for this game without opening Game Setup and keeps your lines, scratches and roster edits.
Guide, Reset this game's lines and the version number moved into the ⋯ menu at the far right.
Version 2.2
The screen shows the real page. Each team appears as a true-size sheet of paper, exactly as it prints.
Text: Auto (the new default) picks the largest text, up to 100%, that fits each team on one page. Each team is fitted separately. It won't go below 70%. If a team still doesn't fit, it prints on two pages.
Page breaks are shown on screen with a red dashed line. The break falls between forwards and defense when the forwards fit on page 1, otherwise after a full line of forwards. Page 2 starts with a "continued" bar.
Paper: Letter | Legal in the toolbar, remembered on this computer. Legal is 14" tall, so it fits more at a bigger size.
Text − / + still works and switches to manual. It now goes as low as 50%. Click Auto to go back.
Scratched players now sit in a box below the page instead of on it, so the page shows only what prints.
Version 2.1
Streaks are pulled for every player (3+ games), plus goalie scoreless streaks of 60+ minutes. They carry over from last season.
Career vs. tonight's opponent is pulled for every player.
Pronunciations come from the league's official pronunciation guide for the season.
Captains (C / A) come from a league-wide captains list. Its date shows in Roster check.
How acquired is filled in for everyone: checked details for the Avalanche and Kings, and worked out from team history for other teams ("Acquired from Calgary, March 2026", "Joined from Chicago, 2026 offseason").
A pull now takes about 15–30 seconds and shows its progress.
Still not pulled: injuries and status tags, projected lines and starting goalies (next update).
Version 2.0
Pull stats for any game. Pick any two teams and a date in Game Setup, click Pull stats, and the sheet fills in by itself from the league's stats feed. See section 2, Pulling stats. It explains what a pull fills in, what happens when you pull a game again, and what gets erased (and what never does).
Last season is now all teams combined. A player traded or signed since last season shows his full 25-26 totals, not just his games with this team.
Career and years in the league are pulled automatically for every player.
Not pulled yet (coming in later updates): injuries and status tags, projected lines and starting goalies, captains, pronunciations, streaks, career vs. opponent, and how acquired for players who weren't drafted by their team. (All of these except injuries and lines are pulled as of 2.1.)
The Avalanche and Kings data that was built into earlier versions is gone. Every game now comes from a pull, so every team is handled the same way.
